WHAT ARE DERMAL FILLERS?
Dermal fillers are injectable gels that restore volume in the face, filling lines, smoothing skin, and enhancing areas of lost or missing volume, while also providing hydration.
How do Dermal Fillers Work?
To understand how dermal fillers work, we need to look at how the sugar molecule they’re based on works in the body. These sugar molecules are found in all the connective tissues, including the skin. They attract and retain water as part of the extracellular matrix. The collective effect is the creation of underlying volume, lending firmness, and elasticity to the skin.
As we age, levels of these sugar molecules naturally decline. Our skin becomes dry and loses elasticity. Meanwhile, loss of fat under the skin, and a reduction in bone density cause skin to sag. Wrinkles start to appear thanks to repeated muscle movement and folds arise from the loss of volume. Applying a topical moisturizer that contains the same kind of molecule may provide a short-term effect, however, for true long-lasting moisture and volume replacement deep within the skin, dermal fillers can be an option. Dermal fillers work to attract water and restore volume in the injected area, just like the natural molecules would do. The smooth, supple results look very natural and can last up to 24 months, depending on the product that’s been used.
How long does it take Dermal Fillers to work?
Dermal fillers produce instant results-a typical first procedure takes between 15 and 30 minutes and you should be able to return to your daily activities right away. Dermal fillers are usually well-tolerated and durable, lasting from 9 to 24 months, depending on the product used some dermal fillers also contain an aesthetic, which can reduce discomfort during injection.
